Book Notes and Recommendations by

Jody Neufeld

EARS TO HEAR, EYES TO SEE

Books and music have always been important parts of my life. My mother, who had little formal schooling told me that books were pathways to places I might never visit or people I may never meet --- but I could learn from them anyway. I once read that "music expresses the soul's best secrets".

Susanna Wesley said, "I will never spend more time in any matter of mere recreation in one day, than I spend in private Christian duties!"

In the reviews and notes to come, you will find some reviews or suggestions for reading and listening that I want to pass on. Since Henry and I have very different tastes in books and music, we hope you will find something to meet your needs and interest.

Non-Fiction

The Power of a Praying Wife

by Stormie Omartian. Harvest House Publishers. 1997. (ISBN 1-56507-572-2) I have just read this book for the first time and sincerely wish I had read it 25 years ago. However I am a new wife and find this book full of practical, realistic Scriptural teaching on how to be a Godly, praying wife. This would also be an excellent guide for a women's Bible study group.

Fiction

There are many wonderful Christian fiction writers whose varied styles will meet your interests and yet not cross the line into worldly trash and vulgarity.

For you ladies who enjoy romance, Lori Wick offers wonderful stories of people who may struggle through varied situations with God's presence manifested through themselves and others. Sophie's Heart, The Princess, Pretense. (Harvest House Publishers)

If you like historical novels, Anna Ewell Hunt's 17th century New England comes alive through her series that includes Roanoke and Jamestown (Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.). She has been careful not to change the historical facts while including fictional characters who show us insight into the daily lives of these early settlers.
