Jody's Picks!
Now that the holidays are over with all those wonderful films that I watch annually, I am looking for some films to watch that do not have Christmas trees!
One of my favorite actors is Sidney Poitier, truly a gifted man. Born in 1927 and raised in the Bahamas, Mr. Poitier says he was taught by his parents that he could achieve whatever he set his mind to do. Certainly he had perseverance and a personal measure of self-worth in order to succeed as a black actor in a not only a grossly predominately white workplace but it was a workplace that was controlled by whites. Stories were not written with blacks in mind except as slaves and servants. Sidney Poitier changed all of that!

Lilies of the Field
(1963 Black & White, ASIN# B000056HEH)
Without a doubt, this movie is my favorite. It has a wonderful story line of an itinerate handy man who builds a church for a group of nuns in NoWhere-ville, SW United States. These sisters have lived through Hitler's Germany, traveled across the US and are now determine to build a church where they and the local Hispanics can worship the Lord. Poitier singing that wonderful spiritual "Amen" is icing on the cake!
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
(1967 Color, ASIN# 0767825616)
It can't get any better than to have Poitier in a film with Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn. This was Tracy's last film and he addressed a highly controversial subject of the late 1960's, racially mixed marriages. This continues to be the 'pink elephant in the middle of the room' that we would like to say we have legislated into oblivion but until we can discuss our feelings without finding the offense before the discussion, we will continue to paint over the problem and punish the children.
Sneakers
(1992, Color, ASIN# B00008OE4W)
A modern spy drama with Poitier again showing why he is such a great actor. Robert Redford and Dan Aykroyd are a good addition to Poitier's more serious and steady character. I love a surprise ending!
More good movies available on DVD that go well on a cold winter night with popcorn and/or hot chocolate!...
Preacher's Wife
(1996, Color, ASIN# B000065V3J)
Whitney Houston and Denzel Washington as the wife and angel, respectively, bring energy and a good story to life in this remake of the 1947 original, The Bishop's Wife, with Loretta Young and Cary Grant in those roles. Penny Marshall of Laverne and Shirley fame directed this new version.
Ghost Dad
(1990, Color, ASIN# B00005B1WN)
Sidney Poitier goes behind the camera and becomes the director of this new spin on a workable plot: the 'dad' realizes that his time with family is more important than the time he spends trying to buy their love. Bill Cosby plays the title role using his wonderful humor to bring home the vital point in parenthood.
Finding Nemo
(2003, Color, animated, ASIN# B00005JM02)
This rises to the FANTASTIC level in my opinion. Great animated film that the WHOLE family can enjoy! A plot that a child can grasp with subplots that keep the adults interested and laughing!
Bruce Almighty
(2003, Color, ASIN# B0000AKCKJ)
Possibly some of you have heard very 'negative' criticisms of this movie, ie an irreverence for God. I didn't leave the theater for popcorn so I don't think I missed any scenes. I did not see or hear any irreverence. I heard Jim Carrey's character ask a lot of the questions that many non-believers (and even some of we believers) ask. When a human experiences some of life's 'lemons' that seem to come too fast to count and shakes his fist at God saying, "The only one not doing his job around here is YOU!" I 'see' God looking at HIS child with compassion and proceed to try to get the child to listen as He comforts and reassures him that He cares. I was even glad to see that a lesson was given about the live-in relationship that fell apart because of no commitment and came back together because of her prayers and his commitment. I teach on prayer at conferences and would like to be able to get past the royalties and use clips for teaching!
Seabiscuit
(2003, Color, ASIN# B0000DCGT0)
My husband was given the book AND DVD for Christmas. I found the movie to have a very slow and a bit confusing start as groundwork for the characters was laid and tied together. I wonder if the book won’t do a better job smoothing this process. Tobey Maguire, as Seabiscuit's hard-luck jockey, grabbed the essence of this movie with its Depression era background – VICTORY comes not in being the strongest or the biggest but from a heart that believes!
